Please take a few moments to advocate for Wake County public schools by contacting your county commissioner and urging them to fully fund the WCPSS 2017-2018 proposed budget.
The County Commissioners are considering the budget now and had a public meeting about it last night. The amount of increased school funding currently proposed by the county commissioners is disturbingly low.
The proposed WCPSS budget is nuts and bolts, day to day operational expenses. For details on the proposed WCPSS budget, follow this link.
It asks the county to appropriate an increase of $45M over last year. Right now, the County Manager's budget contains $16M in additional funding over last year. Jim Hartman, the county manager, says WCPSS should spend down their $21M fund balance (rainy day fund) to zero, leaving no savings for emergencies. The county budget does not account for any other increases in appropriations.
Please ask the County Commissioners to fund WCPSS at an additional $38M in order to fund:
Graduation day is tomorrow, Friday, June 9th. The ceremony is at 10:00am in the Multipurpose room. (Only two guests per student please.) After the ceremony families are invited to the 5th grade building to get their 5th graders, celebrate with cupcakes and say goodbye to teachers.
And then… POOL PARTY!!! Our friends at the North Raleigh Swim Club are hosting a pool party for all North Ridge 5th graders and their families to celebrate graduation. (You don’t have to know how to swim. There is a roped off shallow end, a beach volleyball court and a sandy playground. Something for everyone!) The party is from 3-5pm. North Raleigh Swim Club is located only about a mile away from the school at 8105 Haymarket Lane which is right off of Harps Mill Road.

Today at school, students were shown a slideshow about the importance of summer reading put together by Mrs. Penny. You can view that slideshow as a video below. One of the slides on the powerpoint shows a summer reading challenge that will be sent home with the children on June 7th along with a bookmark. The challenge involves completing a checklist and/or a bingo card by reading a variety of books over the summer. If students complete this paper and return it to Mrs. Penny in the fall, they will receive a free kids meal coupon, a coupon for tokens at Adventure Landing and a piece of candy! Let’s get our kids reading this summer and turn a summer slide into a summer leap!
Online orders will be accepted until June 16th. Just go to www.shopttkits.com and enter account #: 88439 to purchase school supply kits for your kids!
A big congratulations goes to Mrs. Schuman's fourth and fifth grades Mathletes, whose hard work over the past several months has paid off. On Saturday, May 20th, they went up against Douglas Elementary School in a friendly Mathletes Competition, where the North Ridge students won the competition and the right to keep the Mathletes trophy at North Ridge through the next school year! Congratulations, Mathletes! We are so proud of you!
